LIVE ONLINE TRAINING FOR PROFESSIONALS
Working with Romanian-speaking Survivors of Domestic Abuse
Culture, barriers and safe practice. 2 hours, live on Zoom, with a certificate of attendance.
Why this training
Romanian is now one of the most common main languages in England and Wales. At the 2021 Census, 472,000 people used it as their main language. Services meet Romanian-speaking women every day, yet very little training addresses this community specifically.
What you will learn
- Who the Romanian-speaking community in the UK are, including Roma Romanians and Moldovan dual nationals
- How family norms, shame and past experience of authorities shape disclosure
- The barriers these survivors face: language, EU Settlement Scheme status, economic abuse, insecure housing and transnational abuse
- How to work safely with interpreters in domestic abuse cases
- A practical checklist for assessment, safety planning and referral
Who it is for
IDVAs and domestic abuse practitioners, social workers, housing and homelessness officers, health visitors, midwives and GPs, police officers and MARAC partners, Early Help and family support workers.
Your trainer
Otilia Mutu is a qualified IDVA and the Initiator of Lotus Justice & Support Centre CIC, the first UK service dedicated to Romanian speakers affected by domestic abuse. She works with Romanian-speaking survivors across the UK every week.
